Keane McDonald: A recruiter’s view on what young Irish lawyers really want

Celebrating 20 years in business, Keane McDonald places legal talent at every level in the Irish market, both in private practice and in-house. It has a well-established reputation for excellence, delivering a discreet, professional service to clients and candidates.

So, how does one of Dublin’s leading legal recruitment specialists perceive the local market and what advice do they offer to the city’s law firms?

Mia Barry, the firm’s longstanding commercial director, suggests that her role is “all about relationships, building trust, and deepening market knowledge. To develop those relationships, you need a certain depth of experience and knowledge. Giving consultative advice through a partner process is complicated. It involves trusted information being shared which requires you to be very discreet and sensitive: working in an ethical manner around confidentiality is absolutely key.”

She points to the size of the Irish legal market. “Most people know of each other, especially at partner level. At associate level,
it can be different. Although an associate’s name might not be recognised, the firm where they trained and worked will be, so the interviewer will know whether they are likely to be a good fit.”

Competency-based interviews at law firms are rare, she notes. “They focus more on culture, ensuring an all-inclusive and healthy working environment. Employees are looked after, not just in terms of remuneration, but also wellbeing – employers have focused more on this in recent years.”

Money, she says, is always important. “New international entrants pay above market rate to secure their initial cohort of hires. This was very attractive to many lawyers whose firms had not perhaps kept up with annual salary increases.”

International firms bring transparency

Before the recent influx of international firms, she explains, the market was quite opaque. “There was little knowledge around what firms paid or how promotions happened,” she says. “Their arrival brought greater transparency around remuneration, benefits and career paths, which encouraged local firms to review their policies. We’ve noticed the pay gap closing with local firms now almost at par.”

Growing demand, she explains, has led firms to focus on “better benefits, including a stronger social aspect and a more

harmonious balance between work and home life. As salaries became better aligned, the focus shifted to employees’ well-being. It’s a key factor for most when considering a move.”

According to Barry, international firms have also brought transparency around career trajectory, delivering greater

clarity to how promotion works. “This more open culture has shed light on partner-level hires and promotions, although myriad different package structures still exist at a senior level,” she says. “From a talent shortage viewpoint, the slow-down in international firms entering the market is welcome: the pressure to hire talent has calmed and it feels more like business as usual. The focus now seems to be on consolidating and making new entrants profitable quickly.”

As soon as economic concerns arise, recruitment is one of the first areas affected, says Barry. “We’ve not experienced any significant change in law firms’ hiring appetite. However, some US companies issued hiring freezes this year on the in-house side. Many firms talk about cautious optimism; certainly not negative. Candidates are very happy to move – there’s a nice rhythm.”

She points to “a continued steady demand” for legal talent across most practice areas. “It feels stable,” she says. “Partners probably notice fewer calls from headhunters as the market takes a breather. The landscape will become more competitive with less opportunities, but we also see continued growth in many firms and anticipate more mergers next year.”

Precious associates

Although firms are recruiting, she confirms the slow-down. “The feeding frenzy for associates
has calmed,” says Barry. “They are more selective, ensuring candidates tick all their boxes. There’s less turnover at associate level due to recalibrated salary levels and the focus on employees: lawyers are well looked after; associates are precious.

“Every firm, domestic and international, says they are growing – but in a more measured way. Some international firms continue to expand quite rapidly, but most take their time, assessing people carefully before committing to hire. The focus has shifted from new entrants to ‘strength in numbers’ and we’ve seen the Top Six continue to hire in growth areas.”

In a relatively small legal market like Dublin, it can be difficult to recruit at a senior level because people are more concerned about confidentiality. Barry suggests that Dublin law firms are open to hiring from overseas, which is confirmed by several firms which have recruited from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa in recent years.

But there is little appetite to go through a visa process, notes Barry. “They would rather wait for the right hire locally. Local market experience is often essential which can prove difficult, especially for more senior lawyers based abroad.”

Which recruitment areas are hot? “It’s easier to say which aren’t hot,” she says. “We’ve recruited for nearly every practice area this year, although technology and corporate are quieter. Litigation continues to specialise more: we see a focus on IP litigation, as well as regulatory and technology disputes.”

So, what can law firms do to make themselves more appealing to young lawyers?

They are improving, says Barry, but “there’s still some work to be done – at all levels. Some firms have transparent steps to follow while others have less clarity. Candidates prefer transparency.

“Prior to interview, firms that share slick presentation packs with them stand out: it shows they take the process seriously and that the candidate is important. When hiring, firms that are highly responsive, communicative and willing to share valuable information are in a much stronger position.”

What sells best

A strong identity and reputation also matter. “Brand is important,” says Barry. “Some candidates prefer well-recognised, longstanding local firms. They’re often considered safe and reliable, while others prefer big international brands. Often, it comes down to personal choice, experience or ‘word on the street’. It takes more than a strong brand to sway someone’s preference. An excellent working culture and environment is as high on a potential employee’s list as the brand.

“As well as focusing on employee wellbeing, Irish firms have increased the benefits on offer (maternity and paternity leave, the option to work overseas, wellbeing days etc.) and there’s an increased focus on culture and hybrid working arrangements. They’ve looked at what helps people perform better while enjoying where they work – it’s a more rounded environment.”

And new offices? “Fancy, shiny offices are great, but if the culture isn’t in sync, that spreads like wildfire, especially in such a small market. Everybody tends to know each other, so a good culture is key to retaining and hiring staff, especially at the junior level.

“Gone are the days of cloak-and-dagger cultures, where you have to second guess your value, work all hours and just hope for the best. Law firms had to evolve, tweaking their environment to become more attractive or risk losing staff. Retaining good staff is much better than having to hire replacements.”

In terms of culture, transparency and communication are the key imperatives, according to Barry. “Firms that communicate well – internally, externally, to us, to candidates, to the market – and aren’t afraid of showing what they do and how they do it, what good and bad looks like, and are honest and open. That’s what sells. That’s the environment people want to be in.”

The Darkness Into Light event, is the major event and fundraiser for Pieta, a charity that provides support for individuals struggling with suicide and self-harm, and the event has since spread globally.

The first event was held in Dublin in 2009, and has continued to grow to include London in 2012, as its first international event, and has since expanded to include international partner charities, in Seoul, Spain, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Australia since 2023. This event is now supported by more than 150,000 participants worldwide.

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a rare neurological condition that causes deterioration and loss of function of the motor system (the cells and nerves in the brain and spinal cord which control the muscles in our bodies). This results in weakness and wasting of the muscles.

MND is progressive and symptoms worsen over time. Sadly, MND severely reduces life expectancy and most people with MND die within five years of the onset of symptoms.

Currently there is no information available about what causes MND.

Various studies have been carried out around the world and the risk of developing MND does not appear to be affected by race, diet or lifestyle.

MND does not occur in epidemics, it is not infectious and it does not appear to be caused by any other disease. It is more common in men than women.

Most people experience the onset of symptoms after the age of 40 years and MND is most common in people aged between 50 and 70 years.

MND symptoms are progressive and worsen over time.

Symptoms initially experienced in distinct parts of the body will eventually spread to the rest of the body. MND does not usually cause cognitive problems or affect an individual’s intellect.

The main symptoms of MND are:

muscle wasting (this is often first noticed in the muscles in one hand, or in one arm or leg)
muscle weakness (it might be difficult to open bottles or jars, carry heavy objects, or climb stairs)
fasciculations (involuntary contractions of part of a muscle, often felt as flickers of movement or small twitches just under the skin)
speech problems
swallowing problems and excessive saliva (drooling)
cramps and muscle spasms (spasticity)

In the later stages of MND, the muscles weaken in the chest, back and neck and people experience difficulties with breathing.

Keane McDonald to support Pieta House Darkness into Light event 2024

Founded in Dublin in 2006, Pieta was established to provide free, accessible one-to-one counselling to people suffering from suicidal ideation, engaging in self-harm or to those bereaved by suicide. With over 200 qualified therapists across 15 physical centres, they do everything we can to ensure that help is available to those in crisis.

In 2020, despite the impact of Covid 19, Pieta delivered over 52,000 hours of suicide intervention and bereavement counselling. They also answered over 70,000 crisis support calls and texts, and directly supported over 600 households impacted and bereaved by suicide.

Pieta are passionate about their life-saving work. And all services are provided free of charge.

In 2009, in the Phoenix Park in Dublin, 400 people set off on the inaugural Darkness Into Light 5km walk to raise funds for Pieta. From small beginnings, the movement has continued to grow, and around 200,000 people now take part in the event annually.

Each year the walk provides an opportunity for people to connect with their local community and to show their support for those who have been impacted by suicide. A team of dedicated volunteers, in Ireland and overseas, return year on year to make the event a success and to help us all continue to raise awareness in the global fight against suicide and self-harm.

Since Darkness Into Light began, supporters have helped raise almost €29 million, which has enabled Pieta to keep its doors and the 24/7 helpline open for people in crisis, free of charge. In 2012, the first international event took place in London, and since then international partner charities, from Seoul to Spain and New Zealand to the Netherlands, have benefited from an investment of over €3.5 million in local mental health support services.

10 Step Guide for Lawyers entering the job market In Ireland

Are you one of the many lawyers considering moving firm but perhaps are unsure about how to take that first step and entering the job market by putting yourself out there, meeting a recruiter, starting the process and ultimately making that move? Having recruited for over 15 years in the legal sector, we at Keane McDonald understand your potential confusion and concern. The legal job market is currently incredibly active and competitive and this guide is to help you get a better picture of the 10 steps you should consider when starting to look for a new job!

1) LinkedIn. All recruiters, both in recruitment firms and in-house, use LinkedIn. It is a powerful tool for us as we can search for specific talent to match what talent our clients seek. We would urge lawyers to add as much detail as possible around the area you practice in; this will benefit you by reducing the number of irrelevant discussion offers. For example, some lawyers perhaps just have “Associate” but nothing else, so it is better to have “Property Associate”. In addition, we suggest that you follow a well-established legal recruitment firm to keep track of new jobs they put up.

We have been asked many times why recruiters ask to connect with you and then do not message you anything once you connect; the reason for this is usually that the recruiter wants to grow their network and it will ensure that you see their feed, including live roles we post. If you have not registered fully with a recruiter, then this is a good way to keep an eye on the market and you can then reach out if you see something of interest.

2) Motivation. Have you made the decision to move job or are you just testing the water? Lawyers by nature tend take decisions seriously, which is great. We would still urge you to really consider why you are moving firm. Is it driven by ambition, money, a better platform to build your practice, work life balance, peers – what is driving you? In the current environment if money is your prime motivation for a move we would suggest you speak to your firm before going to market as counter offers are common; recruiters and the firms giving offers are increasingly concerned about inflating the market and it is creating a volatile process.

3) CV. Update your CV before you “go to market”. This is a worthwhile exercise, as it will help you prepare and make you comfortable when speaking about your experience to date. Your CV should be maximum three pages. It should begin with a short summary about you, highlighting years’ PQE and area of specialism. The CV should “whet the reader’s appetite” so they want to meet you for interview. See Keane McDonald’s page on CV writing for more information here .

4) Business Plan. For anyone at Partner level seeking to move firm, you will need a business plan. Although you might not need to physically produce a plan until later stages in the interview process, it is a useful step in preparation for entering the market. You will present better at interview from the very start, (and we all know first impressions count), if you are fully au fait with your portfolio and what it is you hope to bring to a new firm.

5) Select a legal recruitment firm . This tends to be a minefield for lawyers as the lawyer candidate market is so tight right now. Essentially, there are too few lawyers for all the jobs out there and too many recruitment firms trying to win your attention.

Do’s

Do your research. Has someone in your network used a reputable and good recruiter? Can you get a referral?

Look up their website and LinkedIn pages – do they seem well established? Do they specialise in your local legal market? Do their consultants seem experienced and professional? Do they seem up-to-date with the market and are their jobs current and active?

Send an email or LinkedIn message introducing yourself and only engage if the response is quick and professional.

Do meet with the Recruiter. Once you are happy with the initial interaction with the recruiter, if they suggest to meet please take time to do so. This is a very important part of the process. A good recruiter will be an extension of you and must present you in the very best light – this can only truly be achieved by a face-to-face meeting so that he or she can get to know you.

Do keep track of where your CV goes. You do not want your CV to land on HR’s or the Managing Partner’s desk twice.

A good recruiter should give you sound and comprehensive advice around the market, firms and potential opportunities. Do tell them about your career in detail, the more you tell us about you, what you are seeking, your skills and experience, your motivation for your move, salary expectations, timelines and so on – the better!

Do agree a plan together with your recruiter re the next steps.

If your recruiter does a good job – please tell others. In our business, a referral is wonderful and we do not take them for granted.

Don’ts

Do not just send your CV to a random agency. It is a private document and should only be shared with your recruiter once you are comfortable it will be kept private and NOT sent anywhere unless you have given your permission for it to be shared. Unfortunately, in this very competitive environment there are recruiters who do not adhere to this very important principle. So be vigilant.

Do not meet with a lot of agencies. The legal market, in Ireland at least, is small. One well-established recruiter will be enough and they should be able to cover the entire market for you and look after you very well. It is easier for a recruiter to benchmark the firms and opportunities and advise on the full process if we speak with each firm directly. If not, it is more difficult to make true comparisons. For you, the process is more streamlined, and you can be comfortable that at all times you are receiving unbiased feedback. In addition, when it comes to negotiation of package and terms, having a third party do this for you removes any awkwardness at this delicate stage.

Do not withhold information from the recruiter. They have your best interests at heart and a transparent process is vital for a great result.

6) Private Practice or In-House? With lawyers increasingly seeking a better work like balance there is a surge towards in-house legal roles. The law firms are slowly but surely addressing this and more agile roles are coming onto the market in practice. We advise that you keep an open mind, look at your motivation for moving roles and discuss with your recruiter the entire legal marketplace.

7) Interview stage. Your recruiter should help you prepare with details around the interview and with whom you will be meeting.

Know your CV inside and out, know dates, titles, duties etc.

Be clear and concise about what you want (while keeping an open mind).

Know your three key technical strengths.

Know three of your strongest competencies.

What will you bring to their firm?

Why do you want to work for them?

Immaculate presentation, dress for success!

8) Offer stage. The key at this stage is to avoid surprises. You will have shared the package you are aiming for. The recruiter should be aware of the firm’s budget so both should hopefully match at this point. You may decide that you want to negotiate aspects of the package, and again, you need to discuss with your recruiter who knows the firm. Communication at this stage is vital – tell your recruiter what you are thinking. We are here to help you secure the very best role for you.

The process usually follows these steps:

· Offer

· Verbally accept the offer (or decline)

· Contract issued (can take up to a week)

· Accept and sign contract

· Resign from your current firm

· Agree a start date

· Reference checks and onboarding documentation completed

9) Resignation. In the current market, this is a volatile part of the process. As there is a shortage of lawyers in the market, firms often work hard at making you change your mind and stay with them. We see a lot of counter offers where the firm will match or even exceed the new package you have secured, or they may try and change whatever it is in your role that you were unhappy with. It is very flattering and can be both an emotional and confusing time. Be clear when you resign, have a letter of resignation written as it helps to show your determination. Your recruiter can be a shoulder to lean on in this situation as we help lawyers through this process all the time. Remember “it is only business in the end of the day” and you need to make a decision that is right for you. Work through your resignation period honourably and leave on good terms – it is a small market.

13 Tough Interview Questions And How To Answer Them

Be prepared to encounter some or most of the following “tough questions” in your interview

1.“Why do you want to work here?”

To answer this question, you must have researched the company. You should reply with the company’s attributes as you see them. Cap your answer with reference to your belief that this can provide you with a stable and happy work environment—the interviewer’s company has that reputation—and that such an atmosphere would encourage your best work.

2.“What kind of experience do you have for this job?”

This is a perfect opportunity to sell yourself, but before you do, be sure you know what is most critical to the interviewer. The interviewer is not just looking for a competent lawyer; he or she is looking for someone who can contribute quickly to the current projects. When interviewing, companies invariably give everyone a broad picture of the job, but the person they hire will be a problem solver, someone who can contribute to the specific projects in the first six months. Only by asking will you identify the areas of your interviewer’s greatest urgency and therefore interest.

If you do not know the projects you will be involved within the first six months, you must ask. Level-headedness and analytical ability are respected, and you will naturally answer the question more appropriately

3.“What did you like/dislike about your last job?”

Most interviews start with a preamble by the interviewer about his company. Pay attention: this information will help you answer the question. In fact, any statement the interviewer makes about the job or corporation can be used to your advantage. Use this to highlight all the positives of your last job. criticising a prior employer is a warning flag that you could be a problem employee. Keep your answers short and positive.

4.”Why are you leaving your present position?”

If your current company is not meeting your expectations, you can often explain this in a positive way. “I need to be challenged to develop my potential further. I’m interested in additional responsibility and new opportunity, which unfortunately are limited at (name of current employer) because of (company size/limited product line/company restructuring or downsizing). The reputation and market focus of (name of prospective employer) offers many opportunities for someone with my training and experience. It’s the ideal environment I’ve been seeking.”

5.“How long would you stay with the company?”

The interviewer might be thinking of offering you a job. But, employers are aware that the marketplace is such that new hires often do not stay with the company for more than two years. Your reply might be: “I would really like to settle down with this company. As long as I am growing professionally, there is no reason for me to make a move.”

6. “Have you done the best work you are capable of doing?”

Say “yes” and the interviewer will think you’re a has-been. As with all these questions, personalise your work history and include the essence of this reply: “I’m proud of my professional achievements to date, but I believe the best is yet to come. I am always motivated to give my best efforts, and in any job there are always opportunities to contribute when one is alert.”

7. “How long would it take you to make a contribution to our company?”

Again, be sure to qualify the question: In what area does the interviewer need rapid contributions? You are best advised to answer this question with a question: “To help me answer, what do you anticipate my responsibilities will be during the first six or seven months?” You give yourself time to think while the interviewer concentrates on images of you working for the company.

8. “What would you like to be doing five years from now?”

The safest answer contains a desire to be regarded as a true professional and team player. As far as promotion, that depends on finding a manager with whom you can grow. Of course, you will ask what opportunities exist within the company before being any more specific: “From what I know and what you have told me about the growth here, it seems operations is where you need the effort and where I could contribute most toward the company’s goals.”

9. “What are your biggest accomplishments?”

Keep your answers job-related, a number of achievements should spring to mind. Do not exaggerate contributions to major projects. You might begin your reply with: “Although I feel my biggest accomplishments are ahead of me, I am proud of my involvement with…I made my contribution as part of that team and learned a lot in the process. We did it with hard work, concentration, and an eye for the bottom line.”

10. “Can you work under pressure?”

You might be tempted to give a simple yes or no answer, but don’t. It reveals nothing and you lose the opportunity to sell your skills and value profiles. Actually, this common question comes from an unskilled interviewer, because it is closed-ended. As such, it does not give you the chance to elaborate. Whenever you are asked one of these, provide a brief yet comprehensive answer and seize the opportunity to sell yourself. For example, you could say: “Yes, I usually find it stimulating. However, I believe in planning and time management in order to reduce panic deadlines within my area of responsibility.”

11. “What are you looking for in your next job?”

Avoid saying what you want the company to give you. You must say what you want in terms of what you can give to your employer. The key word in the following example is “contribution”: “My experience at the XYZ Corporation has shown me I have a talent for motivating people. This is demonstrated by my team’s absenteeism dropping 20%, turnover steadying at 10 percent, and production increasing 12%. I am looking for an opportunity to continue that kind of contribution, and a company and supervisor who will help me develop in a professional manner.”

12.”Describe a difficult problem you’ve had to deal with.”

This is a favourite tough question. It is designed to probe your professional profile; specifically, your analytical skills: “Well, I always follow a five-step format with a difficult problem. One, I stand back and examine the problem. Two, I recognise the problem as the symptom of other, perhaps hidden, factors. Three, I make a list of possible solutions to the problem. Four, I weigh both the consequences and cost of each solution and determine the best solution. And five, I go to my boss, outline the problem, make my recommendation, and ask for my supervisor’s advice and approval.” Then give an example of a problem and your solution.

13 “What would your references say?”

You have nothing to lose by being positive. If you demonstrate how well you and your boss get along, the interviewer does not have to ask, “What do you dislike about your current manager?” Any job offer is always subject to satisfactory reference.

A healthy corporate culture, which values all employees regardless of their title or responsibility level, will always be more attractive to a prospective employee. A large percentage of the workforce will spend at least eight hours per day with their work colleagues so, for many Corporate culture is one of the key deciding factors for candidates when considering a career move. The corporate culture is at least as important as their remuneration package.

As the role of any CEO is to ensure the overall success of the organisation, they need to be a strong leader and a positive influencer. It is crucial that they project a positive image and strong values in order to earn the respect of their employees. In our experience, the companies that attract the best talent tend to have leaders who are optimistic, confident and passionate about their business. As employers, they are usually pragmatic and inspirational, with strong integrity and excellent communication skills.

Career advancement and skill enhancement are often the principal motivators behind decisions to seek a new role. Candidates often come to us feeling frustrated because they are either ‘stuck in a rut’ or see no opportunity for advancement due to the existing hierarchy within their organisation.

Companies that offer merit-based career advancement rather than solely basing it on length of service tend to be the more attractive options for these candidates. Employers who have structured and formal educational programmes in place to encourage skills and knowledge advancement have a higher success rate in hiring the best talent.

Smaller companies often face a challenge when it comes to competing with the corporates for good candidates. Not only is it difficult for SMEs to pay the salaries and benefits offered by larger employers but they may not have the resources to provide educational programmes and performance appraisals that are common in big organisations.

On the flip-side however, many candidates decide to move away from the ‘big firm’ culture to a smaller company which might offer a less ‘hands on’ management style and a more transparent and quicker path to promotion.

Agile working is the new buzz phrase at the moment for many employers and candidates. An agile working policy gives employees the freedom and flexibility to work certain hours from home or remotely when required. This suits mothers returning to work after maternity leave or time out, and for women (and men) looking for a more flexible working arrangement.

Companies not willing to offer such policies or flexibility may struggle in securing top talent.

In my view, the role a recruiter plays in the recruitment process is crucial. Managing expectations on both sides is one of the most important aspects of any recruitment assignment.

A knowledgeable and experienced recruiter will be capable of giving both client and candidate a realistic timeframe, and salary expectations, job titles and other employment conditions must be managed carefully from the outset. If these key expectations are not managed efficiently and with transparency, unnecessary conflict can arise that can cause the process to fall apart.

Keane McDonald speaks to Business Plus Magazine about the effects of COVID-19 on the legal recruitment sector

Following at least six years of steady growth in the recruitment industry, the onslaught of Covid-19 brought the steepest decline to the sector since the 2009 recession, according to Yvonne Kelly, Managing Director of Keane McDonald. While some sectors have maintained a certain stability, the legal sector saw a sudden halt in recruitment in March. A domino effect of salary cuts, reduced working hours, bonus cancellations and, in a few cases, redundancies followed.

With the country swiftly plunged into a strict lockdown, hiring freezes were introduced by the majority of law firms, many financial institutions and corporates across a number of sectors says Kelly. The focus for these employers was on managing the logistics of their employees working remotely. For the most part this was considered a success, and the efficiency with which people adapted to such an environment has likely changed the landscape of agile and remote working forever more.

As the country moved though the stages of lockdown, and with a growing sentiment of ‘it’s time to get back to business’, green shoots emerged from a hiring perspective. Organisations felt comfortable that new lawyers could be successfully hired and onboarded remotely. The adaptability of businesses and their employees has shown that work can, and must, go on. Interestingly, however, the areas of demand have changed quite significantly, mirroring how certain industries have been affected by the pandemic.

According to Mia Barry, Commercial Director at Keane McDonald, many buoyant legal specialisations in the past five or six years are no longer in demand. The aviation industry, for example, has fallen off a cliff and there is no longer the urgent need for lawyers with such experience. Six months ago, these lawyers could practically ‘name their price’.

As recently as February, corporate lawyers could often have an offer from any firm they wished. Firms will now only hire an M&A lawyer where an actual vacancy exists. According to Barry, litigation, healthcare, employment, insurance and IT/IP are the new ‘in demand’ areas.

Keane McDonald Commercial Director, Mared Roberts, has noticed a significant decrease in opportunities for in-house lawyers in certain specialisations. Roberts says that, similar to practice, there is still a need for experienced data protection and IT lawyers, while the opportunities for corporate transactions lawyers and general legal advisors is lower than usual. Compliance is still considered an ‘in demand’ area according to Roberts.

From a recruitment perspective, there has been a sudden shift from the candidate-driven market we have become accustomed to in recent years, says Kelly. With fewer jobs and more candidates available in certain sectors, lawyers seeking a career move will need to be more proactive.

Those who qualified in the last six years will have previously experienced numerous approaches from recruiters. Many of these lawyers, who are no longer in high demand but are seeking a career move, will need to step outside their comfort zone and take charge of their job search in order to really stand out in the crowd. This will be a complete mindset change, especially for many of the more junior lawyers.

While Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on the legal recruitment industry, there are many positives emerging in the sector. Salaries have stabilised and agile working works! Many progressive employers are seeing that now is the time to snap up the top calibre lawyers while their competitors hold off on hiring due to market uncertainties. The tide will turn again, it is just a matter of when.

Amazon to build 105 MW solar farm in NSW

Amazon has revealed a plan to build a large-scale 105 MW solar farm in NSW in the company’s second renewable energy project in Australia.

The new plant will generate 250,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy per year, enough to power the equivalent of 40,000 average Australian homes.

The announcement follows on the heels of Amazon’s commitment in February to purchase 60 MW of power from a new solar project being built at the Gunnedah Solar Farm in northern NSW.

The Gunnedah Solar Farm, to be built by Canadian Solar , received state government approval in March last year.

Once operational, the farm will provide Amazon Web Services ( AWS ) with the equivalent of a further 142,000 MWh of renewable energy annually.

The second solar project is also one of five new renewable energy projects announced by Amazon globally, with the company also announcing three new projects in the US and one in China.

These investments form part of Amazon’s commitment under the Climate Pledge to accelerate the goals of the Paris Agreement. The company committed in September to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2030 and net zero carbon across Amazon by 2040.

“These five new renewable energy projects are a critical part of our roadmap to reach this goal,” Amazon VP of Sustainability Kara Hurst said.

“In fact, we believe it is possible to reach 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of the goals we announced [in September]. While this will be challenging, we have a credible plan to get there.”

Adam Beavis, Managing Director for Amazon Web Services’ Commercial Sector in Australia and New Zealand, said the Australian plant will likewise help the company achieve its sustainability targets for the region.

“Climate change is an important issue that we all face as community members and business owners and leaders,” he said.

“We are proud to announce Amazon’s second solar project in Australia as another step forward on our path to 100% renewable energy. Once complete, this new project will have the capacity to power the equivalent of 40,000 average Australian homes, further supporting our commitment to reach net zero carbon across Amazon by 2040.”

A new report has given an overview of the Australian legal market, noting the disparity between the short supply of candidates and an increasing demand for their services.

According to the report, the “talent shortage facing Australian law firms is acute as ever” and the shortage is widespread within the Legal Sector.

As stated in the report the following areas are in increasing demand:

In the last few years there has been a constant demand for banking, corporate and projects lawyers.

“This year, the royal commission into the financial services industry has created a voracious appetite amongst law firms of varying shapes and sizes for litigators and financial services advisory lawyers.

There is also an upturn in needs across employment, competition and IP.

From a global perspective, the report found there is a huge demand for transactional lawyers, following a brief pause in recruitment drives among UK law firms, due to Brexit concerns.

“This has continued to deplete stocks of Australian mid-level lawyers seeking greener pastures in London (and indeed other locations),” the report said.

“Whilst we hoped for an exodus of returning Australian lawyers back to our capital cities, it became evident over 2017 that Australian lawyers working in London were being well looked after – continuing to enjoy high quality work and responsibility and excellent earning power.

Over on the in-house side, the report noted that in-house legal teams have continued to grow solidly.

How was demand in legal recruitment over the last year and what trends have you noticed?

2017 welcomed a significant increase in legal recruitment, mainly due to the healthy economic growth, but also partly due to some prominent international law firms establishing a presence here.

Demand for specialist experience in the fields of commercial property, construction, employment and IP law continued to grow steadily, while the number of requests for experienced investment funds lawyers and financial services regulatory lawyers surged quite dramatically.

Although the demand for in-house legal staff continued to grow steadily, the need for private practice solicitors was remarkably higher in comparison.

Has the upcoming GDPR legislation influenced recruitment trends in the legal sector?

The upcoming GDPR legislation has not yet shown significant change in recruitment trends. However, as recruitment firms rely so heavily on data, the new legislation will clearly hit the sector quite hard.

In order to ensure compliance, most recruitment companies are putting very stringent policies in place, in time for the GDPR launch in May. For example, having a centralised system that handles all candidate and client data will be imperative under GDPR.

What about the availability of legal talent – what trends are you seeing there?

The shortage of top-calibre legal talent is clearly a growing problem as the economy continues to grow. The candidate pool in Ireland is not nearly sufficient for the surge in demand for these professionals. There is increasingly a shift in how and where we find legal talent. The need for legal professionals to return from overseas is enormous.

Have there been any significant movements in legal sector salary ranges?

Salaries in the legal sector continued to show a steady increase in 2017, in particular for recently qualified solicitors up to mid-level associates in the law firms. At the time of the Brexit result, we certainly experienced an upsurge in Irish lawyers looking to return, and indeed many UK lawyers exploring Ireland as a jurisdiction. However, with time and with the uncertainty of who will be most affected, there seems to be less urgency attached to moving.

What about the gender balance in the legal sector. Has this changed much in recent years?

For a number of years now, the gender balance for law graduates has been heavily weighted towards females, at a ratio of roughly 70/30. This trend is continuing without notable change.

What are the in-demand skills-sets expected from new legal graduates?

Some law firms may have their own specific competencies when hiring law graduates. For example, the top law firms require a minimum grade of 2.1 honours in an applicant’s primary degree.

However, some key skills are generally considered essential by all commercial law firms, such as solid analytical and evaluative skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, a global and commercial mind set, and, above all, passion and resilience. A legal graduate will need to be a team player and to succeed in the demanding world of law must be motivated, determined and driven.
